The Reed Procedure℠

The Reed Procedure℠ was developed by Dr. Kenneth Reed specifically for the treatment of chronic severe headaches. His technique, involving both the occipital and supraorbital nerves, has a documented success rate
of 80-100% in controlling severe head pain.
The Reed Procedure™

Pioneer in the Field

Dr. Reed first began applying neurostimulation for intractable migraines in 1992. He has since performed more than 200 procedures in his quest to help patients that have not had success with other forms of treatment, increase functionality for daily living, and enjoy a greater degree of relief from chronic migraine pain.

  • Dr. Reed and his partner physicians have performed more neurostimulation implants for headaches that any other physician or group in the world – more than 300 to date.
  • Reed Migraine Center is the only network of partner physicians in the world with extensive experience in treating adolescent patients for migraine pain.
  • The Reed Procedure™ is a specialized implantation technique pioneered by Dr. Kenneth Reed.

What is Neurostimulation?

Often referred to as a “pacemaker for pain,” the minimally invasive implantation of a neurostimulation device delivers mild electrical pulses to the nerves just below the skin. The electrical pulses replace the feeling of pain with a tingling or massaging sensation, reducing or eliminating the need for pain medication in patients who are candidates for this treatment.

“We’ve seen remarkable results with the Reed Procedure℠,” says Dr. Reed. “Patients with debilitating migraines who did not respond to other treatments or therapies now have long-term relief from their headache pain and are enjoying their lives again.”

Award Winning Therapy

In 2009, Dr. Reed and Kelly Will, M.D. received the prestigious Cephalalgia Award from the International Headache Society for their groundbreaking research and innovative migraine treatment.  Reed Migraine Center’s revolutionary approach has been cited by numerous leading neurologists from around the world as both a template and guide for future research and medical study.

Although the procedure is not currently FDA approved, neurostimulation for back pain is approved, and neurostimulation for head pain was granted CE Mark approval for use in Europe in September 2011.
